Blog #5 Test grade due 1/31/17

Neil Gaiman, the author of Coraline and The Graveyard Book , as well as many other books, wrote:

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.

...I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.

And for this year, my wish for each of us is small and very simple.

And it's this.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.

Please REACT to this quote at length, in your BLOG post this month!

  1. I think that this quote helps you to realize mistakes in a different way, because we all want to be better, and this quote shows that making mistakes is a vital part of life if you want to get better, which is a necessity anyways in life. This causes you to think about how you always want to be mistake-free, although it is good, because everybody wants to live a life with no problems or tension, but mistakes actually help you to be mistake-free. This is because mistakes actually pushes your life forward, and you should make many mistakes so you can try out many new things, and you can also start to try new things. Mistakes can give you a learning lesson, help in teaching you how to live, can help you to pushing yourself in a situation that you have made a mistake in before. Mistakes can encourage you to start changing yourself, and also start to changing your whole world around you. Mistakes can also help you to start learning many more new things, and overcome your fears of many new types of things, such as speaking in public, hang gliding, heights, and many more, just by a simple mistake. You can defeat your fears by the feared mistakes itself, in other words. It is shocking that you can actually get better than your fears, and that you can also learn a lot, and can even change your own world. And to think that everyone fears it, because it also has a consequence, and therefore isn’t all that nice, but when faced with the benefits, then it starts to sound good. Mistakes are inevitable anyways, and it isn’t all that bad when it comes to self-improvement, so it is obvious that some people would rather find mistakes more copacetic than awfully petrifying. This goes to show how much mistakes actually aren’t that bad when you consider how you can get self improved, how you could learn, cope with fears and normal stressors like a test, because you have the experience to help yourself get over the fact that you made a mistake, so you can cope with the new assignment that if you hadn’t made a mistake in, you probably would make a mistake later on. It also shows you that WHAT THIS IS SO WRONG! According to me, this shows how Neil Gaiman’s quote actually might have some truth in it, and it can show how making mistakes can help you to try something new, and can also motivate you to be a better person, which grasps my attention, and causes my to react by thinking that how you can find good in mistakes, which is a little bizarre, because mistake is the synonym of error, and usually nobody likes to come across an error, so it was kind of shocking when somebody said that you can actually benefit from errors. So, in the end my reaction is pure, raw, and stupefyingly shocked, that someone found good in a word technically invented for bad.

  2. This quote makes me look at mistakes in a different way. When I think about mistakes I think about not being the best I could be and about my grades. This quote inspired me to think about mistakes as a new way to learn things in school and a way to make myself better. This quote made me think that if we didn’t make mistakes than what would life be. If we would all be perfect there would be no purpose we need to learn and try new things from our mistakes. I think about mistakes as something that I wish would not happen. I thought that mistakes would hold me back from my dreams. I think that if I make a mistake on a test my grade is ruined, but this quote made me think of mistakes as something great. A way to build myself up to be great. It wouldn’t be fun to be perfect all the time and not have anything to build up on. I see mistakes as a way to bring myself down at one point, but then I can have myself feel great for going from let's say an eighty-five to a ninety percent in my gradebook. I never thought anyone would want me to make mistakes, but the reasons they can help me with are endless. The one thing I don’t want to do with my mistakes is making the same ones over and over again. I want to make sure that I make mistakes that are outgoing and help make amazing things happen. This quote tells me that it is okay to make mistakes, but I don’t want to make silly mistakes that won’t help me very much. I never thought that I would say this but I hope that everyone in this world makes mistakes almost everyday and that they do amazing things with them. Many people don’t value the actual value of mistakes, but now that I have read this quote I understand why there are mistakes in this world. Mistakes help push life forward by showing you that you can do anything even if there are things in your way and those things can help you make yourself better. Mistakes were always a part of my life and hope that they always be so that I could make myself better and build things up from a low perspective. When I first read this quote I thought that it was sort of bizarre, but I as I thought about it I came to know that mistakes are a great way to show how much better you can become and help your life continue in an optimistic way. Mistakes also show you how optimistic you are. If you think about how mistakes help you, you are probably very optimistic, but if you think about how the mistakes could ruin your life (which they probably won’t) then you are obviously a negative person who doesn’t know the value of mistakes. When you make a mistake think again how this could actually make your life better.

  4. This quote is inspiring to do well in school. It is also telling us that it is okay to make mistakes, so then we can learn from them and understand more about ourselves. We learn and explore new things from mistakes. We learn more by making mistakes than someone just teaching you the correct way before even trying yourself. If we didn’t do anything wrong at all and did everything perfect, then what would we learn about life and or anything at all. This quote is a good quote for the starting of the New Year so we can change how we act in a good way. We should better change the way we do something and try our best. If you mess up, it is okay because you are learning and will not make the same mistake again because you learned from that flaw.
This message is a good inspiration not only for kids but for adults too. Everyone gets stressed once in a while about if they are going to mess up in something. It is okay to mess up and learn from it. You learn faster from mistakes and you explored a new way of thinking. This is a very fascinating quote. At first I didn’t understand the meaning of it. I kept reading it over and over in my head trying to figure what this means. Now that I understand the meaning, I also understand the importance of it for everyone to acknowledge. This quote reminds me of some other famous sayings that are still being said to this day.

One famous one that I know will remain in everyone’s head is the golden rule. “Treat others the way you would like to be treated”.
This was believed to be written by Jesus of Nazareth. This quote is being used all over the world. Treating others the way you want to be treated is very important. It tells you that everyone is a person and is the same in a way. We all come from the same earth and have the same color blood. If you were to treat someone unkind, you have to first think, “Is this how I want to be treated?” You have try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and ask that question. This quote is a lot like the other one because both should be known all over the world. Mistakes can be fixed and exploring a new thing in life is not a bad thing. You have more experience than others if you make mistakes. You understand things better because you have done that and you have experienced it firsthand. Any good quote should be well known no matter whether it has to do with dreams, race, respect for others, or even making mistakes.

This quote also reminds me of Martin Luther King Jr. He was a man who believed that anything was possible. He also wrote a famous speech which I am sure many of you have heard of. It is called “I have a dream.” This Speech was made to inspire people to do the best they can do. He also believed that no one was perfect and it is okay to make mistakes. As long as you choose the right path to follow, you can do incredible things. It all depends on whether you choose to correct your mistakes which makes you who you are today. This is how I feel about the quote “to make mistakes today and everyday”.

  5. At first it is very hard to understand the poem but as look into the poem it is easier to understand. First he says that you should have an amazing year. He describes it very odd and weird. The author writes I hope you get good madness. As you look into that phrase you realize he means. He hopes you to read some real good books, make some fine art, sing, get kissed, surprise yourself, and most importantly live. In my past years I’ve done all of this. I have read good books like “Walk Two Moons”, I made gorgeous drawings and sketches, I sung some nice songs, and most obviously I lived a very good and amazing life. Then he says something that he thought a half a decade ago. Now the author of the poem wants you to dream outrageously. In his mind dreams should be irregular, new, crazy, amazing, unusual, and very exciting. He also wants you to create a new invention. I think he wants you to do this because he wants you to feel special. Like most people he also wishes for you to be loved and in return love other people. The reason he wants this is because he thinks the world should be more nice, peaceful, and loving. I think this is very inspirational. Normally you would expect someone to want you have a better year and a happy life with no mistakes at all but this poet wanted you to make a lot of mistakes. You understand why he would rather have you make glorious mistakes rather than to not make any glorious mistakes. He gives very interesting and convincing evidence to support his very weird and uncommon statements. I think the most convincing piece of evidence is when he says making mistakes leads you to learn a lot more than you already know. If you were little and you broke an expensive and valuable phone by throwing it on the ground you learn to not throw anything that can break easily or not to throw anything at all. It makes your mind think a lot. He also says that you are pushing yourself to not do the mistake again. I noticed these quotes are very inspiring and emotional. Finally he says you are doing something. It makes a lot of sense. Instead of not doing anything helpful or good for anyone it is worse than just doing a mistake but actually do something that actually matters. I really liked his supporting evidence for his statement. Next he says to do what you are scared of. I am scared of many things such as small spaces which are hard to breathe in, being buried alive with nothing with me, very high heights, ghosts (if they are real which is not very likely), scary stories that include violence and blood, and last but definitely not least malevolent killer clowns. As you might understand from that list I’m a very sensitive, gullible, and soft sided person. My overall reaction to this poem is that it is very inspirational, odd, and it also gets you your mind thinking a lot. My opinion of this poem is that is very good.

  6. This quote by Neil Gaiman surprised me and shocked me very much. It’s also very confusing because he said, ‘Make glorious, amazing mistakes,’ This really confused me because how can things that you don’t do correctly be glorious or amazing? But then I realized that if you make mistakes that means you are pushing yourself to the very limit. Doing things that you never did before, you are trying to change yourself for the better. You making mistakes means that you are learning to do new things correctly. We heard our teachers and our parents tell you it’s okay to make mistakes and to always learn from them. This quote though, it was different, this man, Neil Gaiman, actually encouraged you to make mistakes. He was saying it as if it was a good thing. And now I realize it actually is. Making mistakes will motivate you to do good next time. Never get so down in the dumps that you can never get back down. If you do that then what happens, you will become depressed and feel sad and then mad and then other emotions and feelings that you should never have. You’re not doing good to yourself if you don’t do anything beneficial with them, you are just doing harm. Don’t stop what you love if you make a mistake. Heck, you should do it even more because of it. Don’t you want to be perfect at the thing you love the most? Crying or being depressed doesn’t give you a step in the right direction. You have to try you actually have to do something. This new idea or new knowledge about mistakes makes me think about it in new light. It shed it’s outer layer changing it, making it something that is actually beneficial to your life. This quote made me change my ways and actions next time I get a horrible grade. Making mistakes is something that is helpful, making mistakes is something that helps you, don’t run away from help, run towards it!

Another thing that Neil Gaiman said in this quote was ‘Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.’ This quote reminded me and made me think of a lot of different things. It’s like people telling you face your fears even though you don’t want to. This quote reminded me of Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban because of the ‘boggarts’. They take shape of whatever your worst fear is and Harry was afraid of dementors, things that take away your happiness and can even suck out your soul. Lupin thought that the boggart would turn into Voldemort so he didn’t let Harry face it. When he found out it was a dementor he said, “The only thing to fear is fear itself.” This quote is very similar to the one Neil Gaiman gave. They both tell you that there is nothing to fear or be scared of. Facing your fears helps you more than running away from them. It does no good if you have to run away from something your whole life. Why struggle when you can just free yourself from all that trouble. The quote Neil Gaiman made combined with the one from Harry Potter told me that you have to rid yourself of all your fears until the only thing you are scared of is fear itself.

  7. When I read this quote by Neil Gaiman, I was very confused. First they talk about how we should have a great New Year, and then they talk about how you should make glorious and new mistakes this New Year. I didn’t understand this quote very much so; I just kept reading it over and over again until… I finally understood what it meant. When I found the meaning behind it, I thought that this quote was very inspirational. It taught me that not to look down at myself when I make a mistake, or think that I will never succeed in life. After reading this quote, I realized that mistakes are vital and helpful for my future. This is mainly because; mistakes are proof that you are trying. When you make more mistakes, you become more determined to your job. When you keep trying, you get more experience. The more experience you have, the better you are. Imagine a life without mistakes. There wouldn’t be a purpose to learn and try new things from our mistakes. I know that most of us don’t want mistakes to occur but, what the quote has taught me, mistakes are going to happen one day or another. This is just how life works. But what I don’t want to do is make the same mistakes over and over again. That really won’t help in my future. If I make different mistakes, I’ll learn a lesson, and it will push me to try harder. For example, let’s say that I got a problem wrong on my math test because I used the wrong formula. I would look back at this quote and think… making mistakes is going to help me in my life, and that next time I will be more careful at using the right formula. To think about it, when you make new mistakes, it affects your health. If you lie on the couch like a couch potato, it is just going to make you even lazier. Well, when you make mistakes, it gives you a chance to do something, as said in the quote. You won’t be moody, depressed, angry, or annoyed. I suggest that you push yourself and accomplish something you’ve never done before. That will make you think and feel more positive and proud. In the quote, it says “Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it” This makes me think of the famous quote “Face you fears”. It is going to hurt you more if you try to run way from your fears. Why not face your fears than go through all your troubles. The troubles I am talking about are people calling you weak, and crying. If you get over your fears, you don’t need to worry about anything. So, to sum up, this quote made me think of mistakes in different ways and that you should be thankful to them. This quote finally taught me the value of mistakes. This really is the best quote I’ve ever read.

  8. Whenever I make a mistake, I normally am so embarrassed I never want to show my face to whoever saw me make the mistake again. But now, after I read what Neil Gaiman wrote, I understand that there is nothing wrong in making a mistake. The fact that he supports different interests and talents makes him a very nice person. Gaiman seems like a really wise guy and I want to hear more of his wise words. He had said “ And for this year, my wish for each of us is small and very simple.” I have never heard anyone say anything like that. I think it means that there is no need for anything too big to occur, as long as we are happy. When we are happy, time seems to fly by, which is what I think he meant by keeping it short. Besides, if the year takes too long, then it will take longer until the next year comes, which means have a whole new year of experience that could come in handy. I like that piece of advice because I can make a lot out of it. I also liked when he said “Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.” It gave me courage to do what I don’t want to do. It seemed like the kind of advice the general of an army would give to his soldiers, but in a gentler way. I understood him very well when he said the world is lacking kindness and wisdom right now. Today more people are interested in being trendy and being the “cool kids’ rather than comforting a friend in their time of need and answering requests. I used to wonder why teachers are so stressed out about stopping bullying because I have never seen any bullies in my life. But after I got to middle school I realized that there are pretty mean people around.(Not bully mean, but still pretty mean.) With all of the mean people in the world, we really could use some more kindness and wisdom. He also said that you should surprise yourself. Each of us have a hidden talent and it is wrong to think you are useless. Gaiman supports so many righteous things. There aren’t many people like him anymore. It is good to know that with all of these terrorists and people who deal drugs, there is someone who sees things the way many of us don’t see it. The entire thing seemed very heart-felt. Gaiman seems to have way with words because he really inspired me to do something. Something great. Something amazing. Sure, I know he is an author but I think that not all authors are like he is. Like I said before, people like him are very rare and I think that the world could use someone like him. His advice was so great that, like I said before, it inspired me to do something. Something great. Something amazing. Something that the world could use.

This quote makes me feel empowered and free to live life to the fullest. It does not matter if you make mistakes because that is natural thing for human beings to do.You learn from your mistakes which will help you in your life’s journey and goals. I have made many mistakes that turned out to be good or even great! Making mistakes can lead to glorious things like art, friendship, love, and discovering something new so this is definitely a message that speaks to me.
Many times the quote mentioned making new things. You should try to do new things because you may end up liking it and wanting to do or have more of it. You could try to do a new hobby like art, singing, sports, etc that you may end up liking. Although it says literally “….that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it.” I think that there is a deeper meaning in this message. Making new things wouldn’t only be physically making something but mentally and socially as well. You could try making new friends who share the same likes and interests as you and instead of looking at the negative side of things try to have a new perspective and attitude and look at the positive side to life.
There were many examples of many great things in this passage but my favorite and most relatable quote was “Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.” I find this quote very relatable because there were many times in my life where I was too scared or gutless to do or say something because I was afraid. For example my father was telling me the other day about a time when I was little and I ran to the swing and a little three year old pushed me out of the way and got there first. I was so gutless I stood there and cried. Throughout my life a I have learned that if you think too much about what others think or if you think too much about about your fears you won’t be able to accomplish your dreams. I found my voice and conquered my fears and now I go up on stage and talk, sing, dance, etc. Although things may seem scary you shouldn’t think about what will happen if you don’t accomplish them or something goes wrong but instead think about what will happen if you do.
Another thing about this quote is that it motivates you to be you and be who you want to be. “Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect…..” This line expresses that we shouldn’t always think about being perfect, what will happen if we make mistakes, or about what other people think. We should do our own thing and live our lives the way we want without all of the distraction of being perfect and everyone else liking what you are doing.

  10. After reading what Neil Gaiman wrote about mistakes and how they can help you in a positive way even though the word “mistake” is directed as a negative word, it changed the trajectory of how I think about mistakes and how they affect me and everyone else around me. After reading what Gaiman wrote, it seems like there is nothing wrong with making a mistake. Now it looks as if mistakes were created to make humanity more efficient. The one line that affected me the most was “Whatever it is you're scared of doing, do it,” because it sounded like the other famous quote that goes along with it, “Face Your Fears.” It’s almost like the quote is telling you, “BE A SAVAGE, DO THE UNEXPECTED.” This also reminds me of the Nike slogan, “Just Do It,” because all of these quotes are encouraging you to take actions that you would think are beyond the regular ones you would take. But there is one thing that I oppose. When Gaiman says that instead of looking at mistakes in a negative way, look at them at a positive way and you will find something profitable, but if you do find something profitable, then the mistake isn’t really a mistake after that and that is the part that I don’t understand. It is surprising though that you can get the better out of your mistakes. It’s almost like you’re outsmarting you’re mistakes. This also makes me feel like I should live life to its peak, with no worries and no heebie-jeebies. The way he said it felt as if a sensei gave you THE words of wisdom in a time of great need. This quote is hard to understand and to get the full meaning, you need to read it more than once. If you think about it, this quote is saying a lot. What this is pointing out to me, is that instead of looking down at your mistakes and being ashamed, be proud that you did them, because those are the mistakes that help you in the future, and make you a better person. If you think about what he is trying to indicate in this poem, you will understand that the mistakes you make, other people will may make those same mistakes. Why should you be ashamed? Now, if you know that you did something wrong, then fix it, before it becomes a habit, because your habits decide character, and your character fixes your destiny! The first time I read this poem, a lightbulb went off in my head because I had never thought about this topic in such a point of view. But then I thought, why couldn’t I think in such a way? Because Neil Gaiman realized that instead of looking at the big things in life, look at the small features, and put deep thought into it and because such small things can make a big difference in your life, that is something that Neil Gaiman realized. So remember, a mistake is a little thing that can make a big difference.

  12. This quote by Neil Gaiman made me realize that mistakes are actually helpful. Sometimes, making mistakes is the only way to know what you don’t know, so you can improve, and fix your mistakes. If you don’t make mistakes, you won’t know what you don’t know. Mistakes also help you set goals. If you make 8 mistakes on a test at the beginning of the year, you can strive to make less that 4 mistakes in the test at the end of the year. When you make mistakes, you are less likely to make them again, which helps later in life, because you know not to make the same mistake. Sometimes, a mistake may seem bad now, but later in life, you’ll be glad you made that mistake, and mistakes show that you are trying.
Some of the world’s best things came from mistakes, like chocolate chip cookies. The inventor, Ruth Wakefield, ran out of baker’s chocolate, so she used broken pieces of semi- sweet chocolate, thinking that it would melt into the cookie, but it didn’t. Through that mistake, the chocolate-chip cookie was born!
Almost every one of you use microwaves everyday, probably. Microwaves were also made by mistake. This quote by Neil Gaiman reminded me of two quotes I have heard before:

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space. - Johnny Cash

Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes. -Oscar Wilde

The quote by Johnny Cash tells you that you should use your mistakes to help yourself nurture. You should not use it to hold you back, and you should not use it as excuse to not try again. The quote by Oscar Wilde has a lot of truth in it. I believe that experience does not come with age, but with mistakes. Sure, if you are 80, you had more years to learn more, but what if you didn’t learn more? Would you still be considered ‘wise’? But if you make a mistake at the age 10 or at the age 100, you WILL learn from the mistake, because, it may seem bad at the time, but later, it will help you. People tend to remember bad/sad events more vividly than the happy things because it changes your life in a big way, so you will probably remember the mistakes better.
In some cases, mistakes could have a negative effects, too. For example, if you are applying for a college, you should try your best not to make any mistakes on the test they give you. Also, if you’re driving, you should definitely NOT make a mistake, because this is about other people’s lives and your life.
But if you make a mistake anywhere, you are not alone. People have made far more mistakes, that were way worse, so appreciate your mistakes.

  14. What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of making mistakes? Probably writing 12x12=147. Or dropping a bit too much salt into that soup you were about to drink. But I think it means much more than that and making mistakes can have a huge impact as to whether or your life will be amazing or just boring. In the quote by Neil Gaiman that I read made me really confused. I mean it says, "I hope in this year to come, you make mistakes." When I read that I immediately jumped out of my seat and scratched my head. Why would an adult want us to make mistakes? He further explains that mistakes lead us to try new things and new experiences. And after reading the quote, I really agree with him. I mean think about, when was the last time a mistake resulted in a new experience that most likely would never have happened before. Like that time I dropped a pizza slice into a cup of soda and ate it. Sounds disgusting but it honestly tasted amazing. Even sticky notes were just an accident that resulted in one of the most commonly used office supply. Also, mistakes help build your self-esteem and make it so you won't make the same mistake next time. Unless you want to of course. But just think about how your life might be if you never made mistakes in your life and everyone you knew was absolutely perfect. Well, I think it would be a quite boring. Don't get me wrong, it would be really cool but just imagine the emotions you feel when you learn from a mistake. You feel great and are smarter than you were before. But, I don't think the quote is just about that. I think Neil Gaiman is telling us to try new things and not to just stay there all cooped up. He even says, "You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something."In the quote, it also says "Whatever it is you're scared of doing, do it." What I think this means is to face your fears so you won't be scared of it. Suppose you have a fear of the dark. Even though it may sound a little childish, some adults suffer from this phobia too. But if you just hide in fear and let it control you, then your life will never be up to its fullest potential. Let's say you were one of the brave men/women ready to face the fear and stop it from controlling you. You could turn off the lights and just sit there and realize that the only difference between the dark and the light, is that there is no light. After all, darkness is the absence of light.
I really liked this quote and it really made me rethink my life choices and who I really want to be when I grow up. I think I'm going to learn from my mistakes and face my fears to become a better person.

  15. When I read these quotes, they made me look at mistakes in a different way. It made me look at mistakes a different way because when you make mistakes people always tells you correct them. But if they read these quotes I can prove them wrong. I like reading these quotes because I always make mistakes. I never recognized how many new and good things you could do just by making everyday mistakes. No one ever hoped that I would make mistakes but now I have and I will. "Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, and changing your world. Your are doing things you have never done before, and more importantly, you are doing something. So that is my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make new mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody has ever made before. Do not freeze, do not stop, do not worry that is is not good enough, or it is not perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work, or family, or life. Whatever it is you are scared of doing Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever." When I read this quote, to me it was inspiring. You can not always look at the downsides of mistakes. You have to sometimes look on the bright side of mistakes even you do not want to know or hear about how it is good for other and you. When I think about mistakes, I usually think about not being the best I could be. These quotes made me feel happy and relaxed to make more and more mistakes. When I first read these quotes, I was like are you crazy, mistakes are bad for you, you should be making stupid or silly mistakes. But when I read it for a second time, I was like, oh now I get it, mistakes would be fun to make. After I read these quotes, in the years to come, I hope that I will make a lot of creative and silly mistakes. After reading the second quote about mistakes and how they could help you in a good way even though "mistake" is known as a negative word, it changed the way of how I think about mistakes and how they affect everyone including me. The first time I read these quotes i was surprised because I never knew that you could think of mistakes this way. Mistakes have helped me to learn, be a better person, and of course doing or facing my fears. I feel like we grow up and learn most things by making these silly mistakes. When you make a silly mistake, think twice about it because these mistakes might be able to make your life a little bit better.

  16. Mistakes are a thing I try to stay away from, but this quote has a strong meaning to life. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of “mistake” is, “an action or judgment that is misguided or wrong.” This quote shows that this definition is not always correct. This definition shows that a mistake is something that is wrong, or an error that a person has done. I would cal this the negative definition. Though it is correct, there is way more depth to this word. I have learned that “mistake” is a powerful word. It can have the effect of the definition stated above, from the Oxford Dictionary, or what the quote said, by Neil Gaiman. Personally, I would prefer the definition from the quote. The reason being, it has a positive effect on the reader, and it encourages an individual to strive for his or her dreams. “Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world.” This is part of the quote by Neil Gaiman. Now think about it, if we don’t make mistakes, where will we be in the world? What will we be able to accomplish? What is our purpose? In reality, we just want to be perfect, but how will we learn about the world and ourselves if we don’t make mistakes. Now, the definition of “perfect” according to the Oxford Dictionary is, “having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be.” In my view, actually understanding the definition of “perfect”, I don’t want to be perfect anymore. Honestly, being perfect sounds boring. What’s the point of life without any errors to teach you how to go further in life? We all need these mistakes to push us further, so we can strive to our dreams and goals. We won’t be able to accomplish them without experiencing something going “wrong” along the way. Neil Gaiman wished his readers something for three years. The first year, he hoped for good things for all of us. The second year he wished the same, but the third year was different. He wished that we make mistakes. He taught us a very important lesson as well, which was to not be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are the reason we move forward, so it is crucial not to be afraid to make them. I disagree with the definition from the Oxford Dictionary for “mistake”. It can lower a person’s self-esteem, and increase a person’s self consciousness. I don’t think a person should be scared or embarrassed to do something everyone does. Everyone makes mistakes, but people still get ashamed of making them. I also don’t understand why people have foolish behavior over someone who makes a mistake, when they make them too. It’s a part of life, but some individuals still decide to bother and make fun of a person who makes an error. A mistake is something nobody should be ashamed of, because it helps all of us grow.

  17. I agree with this quote, when they said that they think that there should be more kindness and wisdom in the world, because right now, some people aren’t so kind or wise. By wise, I mean the kind where you think before you act. Not that I do that all the time. But it’s still a nice guideline to live by. Be wise about your actions and always choose the kind choice over the right choice.
Another part of the quote that I agree with is when Gaiman says that his wish this year is to make mistakes. No one is perfect, and no one should try to be perfect. That super popular girl that everyone likes isn’t perfect. That straight A person isn’t perfect either. Neither is that star athlete that you look up to. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s part of life; and if you weren’t making mistakes, are you sure you’re alive? That popular girl makes mistakes. That straight A kid doesn’t always get 100% on his tests. And that star athlete can make some wrong passes and lose the ball. So we should try not to judge people on how good you are. Like I said, no one is perfect. Also, when we make mistakes, we learn. When we make a mistake, we learn not to do that again. When you’re afraid of doing something, just do it. Because, what’s the worst that can happen?? At least you know not to do it again.
Lot’s of people are afraid of making mistakes. Afraid of doing something wrong. And most of all, afraid of the punishment that comes afterward. If you do make a mistake, just know that it’s okay. You just learned something new. You just earned some new knowledge. And if you get punished, at least you’re not dead. Sometimes it’s good to make mistakes. Let me rephrase that: It’s ALWAYS good to make mistakes. Sure, they could bring you down. They can make you lose hope, but mistakes can solve problems. Scientists use their mistakes to learn new things. They know that if you add this to that, it either makes something new, or destroys it. Warriors can make it seem as if they are making a mistake, when they are purposely trying to sneak into enemy territory. When a student make a mistake on a test, like a spelling mistake or a wrong question, afterward they learn the correct answer so that next time they know the answer. Mistakes help us know what not to do next time, and what to do when that situation comes up again. There will always be some sort of form of deja-vu in life, right? Mistakes give us the knowledge of what happens when this happens. Mistakes give us the opportunity to learn life-saving, war-changing knowledge to save our side of a fight. Us humans need to learn the value of mistakes, and how we can benefit from them. So my reaction to this quote is that I pretty much agree with Neil Gaiman, that we should be kind and wise, and that we should always make mistakes, because we can always learn something from them.

  18. This quote might be a little mind bending after reading it the first time, but after I read it a few more times, I got the true meaning of it. At first, he wants us to have a great year, then, later he realizes that making mistakes is what’ll help us have the greatest year ever. Mistakes can be made, but you should learn something from each one. A mistake is not bad, it is awesome. Why? You get to make new things. Through mistakes, you learn, apply, and if you still don’t improve, push yourself. Gaiman also makes us realize to never stop. If you do something and it’s not perfect, it’s all right. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect. Another point in this quote is to face your fear. If you are fear something, face it! If you are afraid to go swimming, face it, and step in the pool. Believe it or not, I actually have a little bit of stage fright. This year, I want to perform, or do something on my own.
This quote teaches me a lot in life. It tells me that it is not a problem to make a mistake, you just have to learn from them. If you get a bad grade once, use it as a motivation to perform better next time. Everyone makes mistakes, and nobody will not ever be perfect. Gaiman motivates me through his quote to try harder no matter how many times you fail. He also says that if you are afraid to do something, JUST DO IT!
That reminds me of what my dad always tells me. “No matter what comes in your way, you need to achieve your goal.” Every time I have a contest, or a competition, my dad repeats this “quote” of his. This just motivates me to do better every time. There is another quote that my father really likes, and it is by Dr.Carol Dweck . “no matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment.” That quote is my dad’s favorite, and he says it every day. Ever since he read Dr.Dweck’s book, Mindset, he has changed a little. He is more motivated to do better, and to learn more. I guess that book has the best quotes in them.
The book Mindset can change your perspective in things. You will start accepting more challenges, and will focus on getting a growth mindset. The book has a similar moral to it. Accept challenges, and face your fears. You don’t want to have a fixed mindset. With a fixed mindset, you believe you are only good at a few things, and can never be good at the others. People with fixed mindsets also don’t want change, and they care too much about their image. People with growth mindsets will always say…. I don’t know this… YET! Then, from there on your goal is to turn YET into reality. You have a motivation to learn something new and to face your fears.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes!

  19. After reading this quote, Neil Gaiman has given me a whole new perspective about mistakes. Generally when you hear the word mistake, the first thing that pops-up in your head is the assumption that it’s something bad. And that’s what they mostly are. Who says mistakes are good? Just like Neil Gaiman, many adults will tell you that it’s Ok to make mistakes and try new things. They say that so you can learn from your mistakes. But when you end-up making the mistake in real life, you realize that they don’t mean it literally. For example, if you are preparing for your finals you can’t afford to make mistakes since you will not get another chance to correct them. You want to make the least amount of mistakes in such cases or else you will end-up ruining your grades. If you can learn and find lessons from your mistake, then it really isn’t a mistake – this is the part I don’t agree with Gaiman.
But in many other ways, Neil Gaiman’s quote gives people the confidence to face their fears. Don’t be embarrassed to do the wrong thing. Nobody looks at other people’s mistakes; they only care about their own. His words remind me of the slogan from Tag Heuer – “Success, it’s a mind game.” Step up and do what you want to. Like Neil Gaiman said, make as many mistakes as you can. Don’t hide behind something or someone. Be who you are and don’t fear to show who you are to the world. Live life to its fullest and enjoy it.
You have to read this quote multiple times before one can fully understand and relate to all the meanings of the words in the quote. It has multiple perspectives and you can derive different meanings from it. Every person reads and interprets differently, so you will have to think how you want to understand this quote. I think that it is best to form your own opinions and should feel free to share them with the world, other people around you.
If you make a mistake, go back and fix it. Don’t just move on, think about it and insure you don’t repeat the same mistake again in the future. Don’t feel embarrassed, but realize it and own your fault. Don’t blame it on someone else. Stand up for what you did and learn to be proud of it. I wonder, what was going on in Neil Gaiman’s mind when he was writing this quote. What influenced his thinking and the need to write this quote? Did he make a mistake in his life? Is that what led him to frame this quote?
I made a promise to myself that I will always remember this quote. A lot of times I worry about what I do in school and what my friends think about me or my actions. I am very scared when I talk in front of my class worrying that I will mess up. The fear of making a mistake ends-up making me nervous and that’s what I interpret as Neil Gaiman telling me to face. Learning and adopting new ideas, accepting that I may fail sometimes will lead me to a better understanding of myself. This, I believe, will give me opportunities to become a better person.

  21. When I first read this quote, I didn’t know how to react. But after my mind processed it through, my brain functioned, and I thought, mistakes weren’t so bad. They give you a chance to learn and not make a mistake again. This can help you a lot in life because when you're down you could figure out that it's not the end of the world. I know it might sound like the person from Ted Talk, who gives pep talks to people who need it. This whole quote changed my mind about what people might think about mistakes and what i think of mistakes. Even when I listen to the word, I hear “mis” “takes”. It means you accidentally mess something up, and that’s okay. I mess up on a lot of things, you mess up, and even Albert Einstein messed up. He was 26 when he discovered his theory of unification. You may make mistakes, but make them all you want. Make them big, small, and do whatever you want with them. The message in this quote to me is to believe that you can do it, and you can. I’m an intrinsic motivator, I don’t like to make mistakes, but when I do, I know it’s okay, now that I read the article,.The only part of mistakes I don’t like are mistakes that you make over and over again. That’s called doing it on purpose. That’’s not a mistake. The most important part of this quote to me is that it helps me realize,” It’ okay, one mistake is not going to affect the rest of your career and life (unless you take drugs,of course.) This is also an important quote to me because the of the beginning. When the narrator starts off, they introduce it with a quote that they said last year. Another part in this quote that I like is how they include what this person said “about a decade ago’’. This person shows me the passion and dedication this person has. I can see that this person wants to make a difference in the society, and make a better person out of him or herself. This can make great change, in whatever goal the narrator is trying to reach. This can make a change in the society as well as a change in themselves. Another thing i love about this quote is that it isn’t formal, it isn’t just for adults and it never suits only one situation. Even when I’m fifty, I know there will still be some room in my life to go back to this very website, and read this quote again, and keep making a difference. No one ever actually said the exact same words to me (but for my parents). What really makes me happy is that this person made this quote in January, which is just wonderful for someone to look back at 2016, and say “This is a new year” It is kind of like saying “ Make it a great year or not, the choice is yours.
